Let me just cut to the chase. I was taken aback by the "sudden" and "unnecessary" moral policing in India when an NGO, Justice for Rights, filed a plea in the Delhi High Court for removal of "uncertified, sexually explicit and vulgar" content from platforms Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and "unregulated and uncertified" content from Hotstar.
If I quote the reports, it claimed that television series like Sacred Games, Game of Thrones and Spartacus shown on platforms like Netflix, contain "vulgar, profane, sexually explicit, pornographic, morally unethical and virulent" content which often "depict women in objectifying manner".
It further added that most of the content on these platforms are violation of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
As soon as this news disclosed in public, Twitterati lost their calm. Outraging comments against this unnecessary censorship flooded everybody's Twitter walls.
